The origin of functional mushroom

From ancient Asia to modern wellness

Functional mushrooms are not just a modern trend. They are part of human history. Long before capsules, powders and labels existed, mushrooms were used as daily allies for strength, resilience and balance.
The earliest written records of functional mushrooms come from Asia, especially from China. For thousands of years mushrooms like Reishi, Lion’s Mane and Chaga were used within traditional systems that focused on long term health rather than quick fixes.
In Chinese traditions mushrooms were often reserved for emperors, monks and healers. Reishi was called the mushroom of immortality not because it promised eternal life but because it was believed to support vitality, immunity and inner balance over time.
In Ayurveda the ancient medical tradition of India certain mushrooms were associated with longevity strength and overall wellbeing. Indigenous and Native American traditions used locally available mushrooms not only for physical healing but also for spiritual and ceremonial purposes.

How mushrooms were used and extracted in ancient Asia

Long before capsules, extracts and laboratories functional mushrooms were already part of daily rituals across Asia especially in China, Japan, Korea and India.
They were not taken as quick fixes. They were prepared slowly with patience and intention. The most common method was simple hot water extraction. Dried mushrooms like Reishi were sliced and simmered for hours sometimes repeatedly. These long boiled decoctions broke down the tough structure of the mushroom and released beta glucans which are naturally water soluble. This is essentially the origin of what we now call hot water extraction. Some mushrooms were also soaked in rice wine or grain alcohol for weeks or months. These medicinal wines extracted compounds that water alone could not such as triterpenes and other fat soluble actives. Modern dual extraction follows this exact same logic just with more control and precision.
Mushrooms were often dried and ground into powders then added to soups broths or congee and cooked for long periods. Fermentation was also used allowing time and microorganisms to gently break down the mushroom making its compounds easier to absorb.
And finally there was the belief that the body itself was part of the process. Mushrooms were taken regularly in small amounts over long periods not occasionally and not for instant results. Consistency mattered more than intensity.
Modern extraction has not replaced this wisdom. It has refined it. What we do today with extracts is built directly on methods that are thousands of years old just adapted to modern life.

A global return

Through trade routes, exploration and migration the knowledge of medicinal mushrooms slowly reached Europe. At first they were viewed with curiosity then caution and later scientific interest. In Europe mushrooms became part of folk medicine especially in forest rich regions. However the use was fragmented and often lost during periods when herbal knowledge was dismissed or replaced by synthetic medicine. It was only in recent decades that Western science began to study what Eastern cultures already understood. Beta glucans, polysaccharides and adaptogenic compounds are now widely researched for their role in immune modulation, brain health and stress response.
Eventually this knowledge reached the United Kingdom where functional mushrooms are now becoming part of everyday wellness routines rather than something niche or alternative.
What we are seeing now is not a new discovery but a return. A return to slower more intentional ways of supporting health. A return to nature informed by both tradition and modern science.
Functional mushrooms remind us that wellness does not need to be aggressive. It can be supportive steady and deeply rooted.

At Celestica by Ray this philosophy is at the heart of everything we create. Our approach is designed for conscious, curious individuals who understand that functional mushrooms are about consistency, intention and long term wellbeing rather than instant results.
